Which? Travel asked over 4,000 passengers to provide average wait times while at airport security queues around the UK.

Belfast Airport was found to have the longest wait, followed by Manchester.

Belfast had average waiting time of 22.3 minutes at security, the worst in the UK and among the smaller airports.

One passenger said they waited over two hours to get through security.

It was also voted the worst airport by passengers last month due to expensive parking costs and busy terminals.

On average, Manchester’s Terminal 1, 2, and 3 came out with wait times of 17 minutes, 15.5 minutes and 15.5 minutes respectively.

Airports with the shortest queue times at security were Southampton and London Southend, with average waits of just 5.2 minutes.

Larger airports Heathrow T5 and Gatwick South had queues times of just 8.6 minutes.

Rory Boland, Which? Travel Editor, said: “Never-ending queues through security are a pain at the best of times, but if you are left waiting for hours on end you could find your flight has left without you.”

He added that airlines are unlikely to offer compensation for delays at security as it is outside of their control.

Rory continued: “Airlines will rarely delay a flight due to long queues at security so it’s important to arrive at the airport in plenty of time, especially if you are flying from Manchester or Belfast.”

Airport security queues could get shorter in the future with plans to scrap the 100ml liquid limits thanks to new scanning technology.

London Gatwick passenger swill be able to speed through the airport without having their passport checks as they roll out facial recognition technology.
