UK Space Conference 2019: Brexit, spaceports and Galileo rival on the agenda

The three-day event will feature representatives from NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) who will be among a huge list of industry experts at the International Conference Centre Wales in Newport. Discussion topics include “The future of space in the UK”, “The global future of space”, “Space in 2035 – what could the future hold for the UK’s defence space programmes?” and “Plantary space science and exploration”.

A UK Space Agency spokesman said: “The UK Space Conference is well established as the most important and influential event for space in the UK.

“For the fifth time, this biennial event will bring together the UK and international space community from across government, industry and academia to exchange ideas, share plans, develop relationships and seek inspiration to thrive in the new space age.

“The conference will again provide unrivalled networking opportunities and build on the success of Manchester 2017 where 1,200 representatives and over 100 exhibitors took part.

“Around 1,500 industry experts, scientists, innovators and government representatives from across the space sector will attend this year’s conference, where the theme is “Inspire, Innovate, Grow”.

“There will be attendees from the UK Space Agency, the European Space Agency, NASA, CNES and the Australian Space Agency, as well as astronaut Tim Peake and representatives from the likes of Spaceport Cornwall, OneWeb and Airbus Defence and Space.”

In his programme notes, Martin Barstow, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, University of Leicester and UK Space Conference 2019 Programme Committee Chair, said: “I feel both privileged and enormously excited to have been asked to take on the role of Programme Committee Chair for the UK Space Conference 2019.

“Since this series began in 2011, this biennial event has gone from strength to strength and become established as a premier event at the heart of the space community, attracting an extremely broad range of participants, including government, the space industry, SMEs and academia.

“A brilliant group of people joined the 2019 Programme Committee and we have been working together to meet the challenge of delivering an event that is even better than 2017.

“We all recognise that the space industry is changing rapidly, with the creation of UK launch capability in Scotland, Cornwall and elsewhere alongside the development of ‘New Space’ approaches.

“We feel that the programme addresses these changes in the organisation of the industry and the development of new business models around the creation of satellite constellations and the related supply chains.”

Other speakers will include journalist and television presenter Sarah Cruddas, professor Carole Mundell, chief scientific advisor and professor of extragalactic astronomy, Dr Graham Turnock, chief executive of the UK Space Agency, and Graham Stuart MP, Minister for Investment with the Department for International Trade.

Express.co.uk will be providing daily coverage over the course of the event.
