UK beauty salons are sending over 1.3 million tools to landfill every month – this is what you can do about it

Big beauty retailers might be working hard to make their products plastic-free but what about your favourite beauty salon? We’re talking nail clippers, scissors and tweezers.

According to new data revealed by Rebecca Crawforth, founder of professional beauty tool manufacturer Navy Pro, a recent rise in beauticians and stylists in the UK (to over 260,000 workers) has resulted in a harmful 1.3 million beauty tools being sent to landfill as waste each month.

The waste epidemic is so bad, that within just one year, the number of discarded beauty tools could stretch the distance of Paris to Edinburgh. YIKES.

The stats shocked Rebecca so much, that she launched a new sustainable beauty tool business that’s not only vegan and cruelty-free but also designed to reduce waste and they’ve already been a hit with both the Kardashians and Oprah’s own beauty technicians.

Crawforth told us, “As more of us invest in beauty treatments, it’s essential that we make every effort to become more ethical in the choices we make. The UK is flooded with sub-standard tools that end up in landfill sites up and down the country in a matter of weeks. It has to change.”

Based in Yorkshire, Navy Pro creates a range of tools for nails, brows and eyelashes that are made using a unique titanium coating, making them durable and hygienic. Crawforth also donates her samples to local beauty colleges and women refugees.

You might not think that there’s very much you can do but if everyone starts encouraging their own salons to switch to sustainable alternatives, we can all help make a difference to crack down on harmful landfill pollution.

If the big beauty retailers can do it, we reckon our local nail salon can too – don’t be afraid to speak up for sustainability.
