UK bank holidays 2019: How many public holidays are left this year?

There aren’t many thing that us Brits look forward to more than a bank holiday weekend.

Those long, four day weekends are a particular treat in the calendar and often filled with lots of booze, lots of food and lots of time with family and friends.

But we’ve been treated to quite a few bank holidays already this year – in fact, last month we enjoyed two of them, one at the beginning of May and one at the end of the Month.

We only get a few bank holidays each year – so how many have we got left to enjoy in 2019?

Here is the full list of bank and public holidays in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

How many bank holidays do we get a year? How many have we got left?

In the UK we have a total of eight bank holidays throughout the year in England and Wales, while there are nine in Scotland and 10 in Northern Ireland.

This means that Brits only have a total of three bank holiday left this year (or five for Scotland and six for Northern Ireland).

Next year, we will get the same amount of holiday, but the early May Day bank holiday will be pushed back four days to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

National holidays in the UK have been referred to as “bank” holidays since the late 19th century, because traditionally on these days banks would close their doors for trading.

Nowadays most of the working population will be granted the day off and many banks and government offices remain closed. A number of shops still operate as usual on bank holidays, albeit often with reduced trading hours.
