UEFA cancels all hotels in Euro 2020 host city ahead of crisis meeting

UEFA have reportedly cancelled all of their hotel bookings in one of Euro 2020’s host cities ahead of Tuesday’s crisis meeting.

The tournament is due to take place this summer but looks set to be postponed until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic across the world.

UEFA chiefs will hold talks on Tuesday and are expected to put the competition back 12 months to allow domestic leagues to finish.

The decision appears inevitable and it has emerged the organisation cancelled hotel rooms last week in Copenhagen, one of the 12 cities due to host matches.

Kevin Helsingholf, commercial director of the DGI city said: “I can confirm that our rooms booked for Euro 2020 at the CPH Hotel in DGI City have been released by Booking.com last week.

“They had booked almost the entire hotel for UEFA – about 80 percent of our capacity.

“The reservation has been there for a long time. They released the rooms last week on release day – the last day you can cancel without a direct financial loss on subsequent cancellation.”

FC Copenhagen’s Telia Parken stadium was due to host four games in this summer’s tournament.

Helsingholf continued: “It’s terribly sad, and it’s a reservation that has been at the DGI city of Copenhagen for a long time.

“We were looking forward to it and the big event, but it has not come out of nowhere – many changes and cancellations are affecting us all right now in the travel and experience business, so everyone including Booking.com must of course follow the situation closely.

“I am sure, however, that we will probably be ready for the European Championship on the other side.”
