Tyson Fury bumped into Dillian Whyte’s brother at his after party to celebrate beating Deontay Wilder and promised him that the Body Snatcher is next in line for a title fight.
The Gypsy King demolished Wilder in Las Vegas on Saturday night to claim the WBC title, knocking the American down twice before his corner finally threw in the towel.
Wilder has 30 days to invoke a rematch clause for a trilogy fight, but if he does not do that, Fury says he will give WBC mandatory challenger Whyte a shot at the title rather than pursue a unification fight with Anthony Joshua.
Fury shared a quick chat with Dean Whyte after his victory, handing him a beer, and as they clinked bottles, Dillian’s brother said: ‘To you and Dillian Whyte man, you gonna do that this year?’
The Gypsy King replied: ‘We’re on it, we’re on it, we’re on it.’
Dean continued his pitch, saying: ‘Let’s get it on, you’re the leading dub now, they’ve got to come chasing you. My brother deserves his shot, but…’
Fury interjected, saying: ‘Listen, if Wilder don’t take his rematch I’ll have to fight my mandatory, that’s it. Listen, me and Dill go back, we go back a long time.’
Whyte himself made his thoughts very clear on Sky Sports, saying: ‘Listen, he should be fighting me next, regardless of whatever he thinks, whatever AJ thinks.
‘I deserve it. I’ve worked hard for my title shot and I keep fighting and I keep risking my position. I’ve been No 1 contender for ages now. They should fight no-one else, apart from me. I’ve done everything that is required of me, so now it’s my turn.’
Asked about the chances of Whyte facing Fury, Hearn – who represents both the WBC mandatory and Joshua – told Sky Sports: ‘When you talk about the top four or top five, Dillian Whyte is on everybody’s list. He’s the WBC interim world heavyweight champion and one thing that’s been a little bit lost so far is he is now the mandatory challenger for Tyson fury.
‘Now [WBC president] Mauricio Sulaiman has made it very clear that that will happen in February 2021, so Dillian Whyte will be the mandatory challenger for the winner of Anthony Joshua against Tyson Fury if everything goes to plan.’
