Tyler Cameron says he was in talks to be the Bachelor, but his 'heart wasn't 100% there'

Peter Weber is your new Bachelor, but according to one franchise alum, the upcoming season could have been much different.

Tyler Cameron, the runner-up from Hannah Brown’s season of “The Bachelorette” said in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight that starring on “The Bachelor” was “something we talked about.” USA TODAY has reached out to Cameron and ABC for comment.

ABC Entertainment’s Senior Vice President Rob Mills told ET last month that Cameron was “absolutely” in the running for Bachelor, unless he and Brown got back together. But the two are seemingly no more, so why isn’t Bachelor Nation gearing up for a Tyler C. residency?

“My heart wasn’t 100% there, and that’s something you have to be fully invested in. I was on the other side as a contestant, which is a much easier role than being the lead of the show,” Cameron told ET’s Lauren Zima, who has been publicly dating franchise host Chris Harrison since January.

He said he nearly didn’t appear on “The Bachelorette” because his father was “very sick and I was very nervous and scared.” Cameron said his dad is now “bouncing back” and “sounding good,” but ultimately he “sat on it, thought on it, and my heart wasn’t in it” when it came to returning to the franchise in a leading role.

Part two of his reasoning: he was “dating other people,” as Zima phrased it.

Brown asked Cameron out for a drink live on the “Bachelorette” reunion show in July following their breakup in the finale. Shortly after, he was photographed leaving her home in LA and then spotted days later with model Gigi Hadid.

“I make mistakes and there’s definitely things that I could handle better but I never meant to do anyone wrong,” he said. “I was just trying to figure out what was best for me and where my heart was at… I miss the anonymity of being able to just blend in.”

Cameron and Hadid have continued to be spotted together – including at Hadid’s grandfather’s funeral. The “Bachelorette” alum added “you shouldn’t go on the show if you have a girlfriend” as reasoning for not taking the “Bachelor” gig, a tongue-in-cheek nod to “Bachelorette” winner Jed Wyatt, whom Hannah Brown broke off an engagement with after accusations arose that he had a girlfriend while appearing on the show.

But Cameron also stressed at another point in the interview that the supermodel wasn’t his girlfriend, though he reiterated it wouldn’t be good to star on a show about dating 30 women at once “if you’re dating somebody or seeing somebody.”

“We’re just friends. That’s just where we’re at. Our relationship doesn’t need to be public,” he said. “She’s good people, she’s an amazing person and we’re just keeping it friendly. I’m at the point where I don’t really want to talk about my relationships. I’ve dated publicly, so I’m trying to date privately. I mean, I’m not in love with anybody right now… We’ve had a great time together. We’ve hung out a few times together, that’s all.”

Speaking of “Bachelorette” alums going on to date super-famous women, Cameron says he’s happy for Mike Johnson, a fellow contestant on Brown’s season who has confirmed he and singer Demi Lovato are seeing each other.

“Mike’s a smooth operator,” Cameron said. “He’s got that smile and those caterpillar eyebrows. He’s cute, you know… I’m happy for him. He seems to be happy and living life to the fullest. I know part of him wanted to be the Bachelor, but it seems like he’s bouncing back alright and he’ll do just fine.”

What’s next for Cameron? He’s continuing a career in modeling. He also raised eyebrows Monday with a since-expired Instagram story that said he was going to a meeting at ABC

“I’ve got a lot of meetings going on right now,” he said. “Trying to see what I can put together.”
