Tui customer left in tears by unbearable drilling near hotel that lasted from morning to night


HOLIDAYMAKERS who were hoping to enjoy a relaxing holiday in Cyprus were shocked to find that the Tui hotel they were staying at was right next to a building site.

And to make matters worse, they claim that there was loud drilling from the site that lasted morning to night.

Several groups of Brits were affected by the noise issue at Tasia Maris Beach Hotel in Ayia Napa.

Pensioners Sandra Wiggins, 77, and her husband Peter, 83, had chosen the hotel because it looked quiet and would be perfect for Peter’s limited mobility.

But they say they were subjected to round-the-clock banging, with others saying the din was so bad it made their beds and pillows vibrate.

The Wiggins’ documented their distress in several nerve-shredding videos.

And dozens of other Brits staying in the same hotel apparently also complained, with some moved by staff.

The Wiggins have now put in an official complaint to holiday company Tui, and they are not alone.

Lisa and Gareth Hobbs, from Caerphilly, paid £2,500 for their trip to Cyprus and arrived at the Tasia Maris on June 23.

They say the trip was so miserable they spent most days trying to get as far away from their hotel as possible.

Post office worker Lisa, 48, and her surveyor husband, 49, have now put in a formal complaint about their 14-day stay.

The couple had booked a relaxing outdoor massage but the noise meant that it was hard to relax, according to Lisa.

Lisa said: “It was unbelievably noisy.

“There was a mass meeting on the Friday and everyone was complaining.

“We begged to be moved, it was just crazy.

“I was waking up every morning and crying everyday. You’d wake up with the vibration on your pillow and they were using this jackhammer.

“We’d go walks at 4.30am just to be tired enough that we could sleep. And there was dust everywhere. It was awful.”

Mrs Hobbs says some guests were moved, but they were only offered a swap a day or two before they were due to fly home on July 7.

She added: “It was a surprise for my husband and I wish we’d never gone.”

Meanwhile, the Wiggins also put in a formal complaint to provider Tui the day they returned on July 8.

They said they were subjected to non-stop hammering and were told a nearby building was being reduced in size, which was causing the noise – although it looked to them like it was actually being built.

Mrs Wiggins, from Bridgend, south Wales, said they had paid £3,300 for their all-inclusive two-week break.

She said: “We’d had quite a stressful year so the hotel was chosen really carefully.

“Peter’s 83 and his mobility is not that good now so we looked at this particular hotel.

“The travel agent said it was the ideal place. Our balcony was right opposite. The first Sunday was the only peace we had. It was constant every day.

“It was miserable and everyone was really angry. Some people just left altogether. Even if you went into town you could still hear it. We couldn’t get away from it.”

A spokesman for Tui said: “We are sorry to hear a small number of customers had a bad experience on their holiday to Cyprus.

“As soon as we were made aware that there would be nearby building work we notified all customers that were due to travel to the hotel and offered a number of alternatives.

“Both families received this and decided to continue with their holiday booking as planned. We will be contacting customers to discuss the matter further.”

The couples who complained about the hotel weren’t alone.

Last month, a mum claimed that her holiday was ruined by building works there that started from 5.30am.
