Try these sweet Yorkshire pudding combos at savvy money-saving prices

CRAVING a sweet treat? I recently learnt that, as a child, Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney devoured hot Yorkshire puddings with golden syrup on top for dessert – who knew?

Here is my pick of two-ingredient desserts to get you in a pud mood . . .

COOKIE UP A STORM: I love Oreos and white chocolate — so mixing them suits me. To make Oreo and white chocolate blocks, you need two packs of white chocolate and a pack of Oreos, £1 at Ocado.

Make this cheaper by switching to Cookies ‘N’ Cream Biscuits, 35p at Aldi. Break half the cookies into coarse pieces. In a mixing bowl, melt one pack of white chocolate and fold in cookie pieces.

Pour the mixture into a cold, waxed paper-lined pan. Do this again in a second pan with the other half of the ingredients. Refrigerate until solid. Remove and cut into small blocks.

SAVING: 65p on cookies

ROAST UNLIKELY: For the McCartney-inspired pudding, I’m a fan of Aunt Bessie’s Glorious Golden Yorkshire Puddings, £1.35 for ten at Asda. But Asda Smart Price Yorkshire Puddings, 50p for 15, are just as tasty.

Pop in the oven until cooked and enjoy with golden syrup — a tube is £1 at poundshop.com.

SAVING: 85p + five more puddings

JELL OF A COMBO: Jelly and squirty cream is a quick sugar hit. I like Hartley’s Strawberry Jelly, 55p at Morrisons — this makes four servings and is cheaper than ready-made pots (at 55p each).

For the cream, President UHT Real Dairy Aerosol Cream is down to £1.50 at Ocado, usually £2. Yum.

SAVING: 50p on cream

PASTA BE DONE: Who doesn’t love pasta? How about Nutella? A bowl of the two together could be the pudding of your dreams. Cook the pasta, leave to cool for five minutes.

Then add a generous helping of Nutella, £2 when using a Clubcard at Tesco, usually £2.90, and use tongs to stir it all together. Epic. You can add extra nuts, if you have them.

SAVING: 90p

TESCO says it will cover the VAT on sun protection products by permanently reducing the price of items in its own-label range, Tesco Soleil, by 20 per cent.

Research from the retailer shows that 19million adults don’t wear sunscreen even when it’s sunny, with cost proving a major barrier for the nation staying safe in the sun.
