True crime fans say this show is better than Making A Murderer

If you’ve raced through every Christmas film and need a break from the festive action, why not revert back to a trusty true crime documentary? There’s certainly no shortage of them.

The current must-see series is Netflix’s The Confession Killer which viewers have compared to Making A Murderer. With five gripping episodes, the grisly series follows Harry Lee Lucas, one of the world’s most prolific serial killers. After he was convicted for murdering his mother in 1960, he confessed to over 600 murders in disturbing detail.

Lucas was rewarded with endless privileges for his confession’s, including lavish meals and access to police files to jog his memory, and investigates how he disturbingly embraced his newfound celebrity status as the case grew in fame. After investigations into the murders began, there was very little evidence linking him to the crime. DNA tests confirmed he was not guilty of at least 20 of the murders he confessed to. It poses the question: was the world’s most notorious serial killer even a serial killer?

Fans flocked to Twitter to discuss the similarities between The Confession Killer and Making A Murderer. “The confession killer on Netflix is 100x better than Making a murder . Plots twists are so mad,” wrote one user. Another said: “If you liked #MakingAMurderer on @netflix , you HAVE to watch the 5-part #TheConfessionKiller ! By end of episode 2 I was gripped and went full-on binge!”

This is not the first time the story of Harry Lee Lucas has been covered, with John McNaughton’s film Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer in 1986. However, Netflix has worked their magic to create the most gripping iteration yet.

At a time when we’re swamped with crime documentaries, this is compulsory viewing for crime drama addicts. Warning: do not watch alone.
