Troye Sivan criticises interviewer for asking if he’s ‘top or bottom’

Troye Sivan has called out an interviewer who asked several inappropriate questions during a conversation with the South African-born Australian singer.

In a rapid-fire Q&A that was published in the September issue of LGBT+ magazine Express, the gay musician was asked whether he was “top or bottom” by reporter Matt Fistonich.

“Ooo… definitely passing!” the 24-year-old was quoted as responding.

He was also asked whether his boyfriend, model Jacob Bixenman, would give him a “hall pass” so Sivan could sleep with fellow artist Shawn Mendes, who in the past has denied rumours that he is gay.

The interview was shared on Twitter by a fan who criticised the interviewer’s invasive questions, to which Sivan responded: “I thought about asking the interviewer about his absolute fave sex position after that last question, but then I remembered how wildly invasive, strange and innapropriate [sic] that would be. Didn’t stop him though!”

“Next time I’ll just do a Twitter q&a,” he added.

Sivan’s latest studio album Bloom was released in 2018 to critical praise, and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 chart.

“[The album is] testimony to his style of songwriting, which is laced with winking and intelligent pop metaphors, and the record’s anthemic, throwback production,” critic Douglas Greenwood wrote for The Independent.

“Often designed to replicate the twinkling, tinny echo of vintage synths in a stadium setting – the work of producers like Haim favourite Ariel Rechtshaid, who makes his mark on the heart-swelling ballads “The Good Side” and “Animal”, and Oscar Holter, the man behind the surefire future single “Plum” – the whole record rejects modern pop tropes to bask in a rare kind of Eighties sonic glory.”

Last year Sivan received a Best Original Song nomination at the Golden Globes for “Revelation” from the film Boy Erased, in which he also had a supporting actor role.
