Troy Deeney urges Prem chiefs to finish season as Liverpool would be ‘wounded’ by null and void outcome


TROY DEENEY wants the season to be completed — and Liverpool to get their reward.

Watford ended the Reds’ dreams of an Invincible campaign and now the coronavirus crisis is threatening to stop them being Prem champions.

But the Hornets skipper — who scored in last month’s shock 3-0 win — told the BBC: “I don’t know when or how but we’ve got to finish it, just to get a fair outcome.

“If you ‘null and void’ it, Liverpool are wounded.

“Everyone wants to see them win it now, they’ve been great.

“I don’t think setting dates is the first thing to do. I think we’ve just got to play it by safety.”

Watford would potentially be one club to benefit if the season is over.

They are outside the bottom three on goal difference and would be in danger of relegation if the season ran its course.

But 31-year-old striker Deeney is adamant everything possible should be done to complete it — even if it means playing behind closed doors.

He added: “The privileged position we’re in, we’ve been tested and will probably get tested again before the season starts.

“If they play behind closed doors, they are going to make sure the stadiums are really clean.

“I think it’s a case of just finishing it but by being sensible.”

Deeney, a friendly and outgoing character, has had to get used to snubbing fans during the age of ‘social distancing’.

He said: “That’s been the hardest for me.

“If I’ve gone to the shop or something and people go ‘Ah, can I get a picture?’, I’m like ‘Nah, nah, I’m not allowed to  do that’.

“There’s no set date to get back to football yet and I’ve started Game of Thrones for the first time.

“I’ve got eight seasons to get through.”
