Triple J: Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton on why they quit for Nova FM

Triple J Breakfast hosts Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton reveal the REAL reason why they quit the national youth station for Nova FM in Adelaide

Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton left Triple J Breakfast for Adelaide‘s Nova 91.9 last October, after three years with the government-funded radio station.

And the duo revealed on Tuesday why they decided to quit the public broadcaster at the height of their popularity.

‘If you want a long-term career in the game, sooner or later you’re going to have to learn how to do commercial radio and be good at it,’ Liam told News.com.au

Liam added that he and Ben had become ‘too comfortable’ at Triple J and felt ready for a new challenge.

‘In community radio, ratings don’t matter. At Triple J, they try to say it matters but no one really cares [because it’s publicly funded],’ he said.

‘I think we were ready, we want to be on the scoreboard and really get a bit more competitive about things.’

Ben and Liam were drawn to Nova 91.9 because they wanted to be able to work in Adelaide, the city they both grew up in.

They have since been replaced on Triple J Breakfast by Sally Coleman and Erica Mallett of hip hop duo Coda Conduct.

The boys’ partnership began in 2013, when they joined forces at Adelaide community radio station Fresh 92.7.

They moved to Triple J in 2016, where their breakfast show became one of the most popular in the station’s history.

Announcing their resignation last year, the pair said: ‘Never in our wildest dreams did we think two dweebs doing community radio in Adelaide would get a crack at a gig like this.

‘Thanks for waking up with us, listening to our s**t talk and sharing your stories, we’ll be forever grateful. The last three years are something we’ll never forget.’
