Travel warning: Deadly winds & heavy rain lash Europe- should tourists cancel holidays?

Parts of Europe are being warned of potential devastation as yet another storm blows its way across the region. The latest in a string of storms to batter Spain, France and Italy, but only the first major blast of the winter season, Storm Amelie is set to bring severe winds, torrential rain and the risk of rising floodwaters. Authorities in each of the countries have issued severe weather warnings, and the FCO is advising travellers to stay up to date on developing conditions.

Storm Amelie began its violent surge in all three countries on Sunday, with extreme wind speeds downing trees and torrential rain causing rising water levels.

In Spain, weather warnings remain in place in coastal regions, although they have been downgraded to yellow warnings according to Meteoalarm.eu.

The current warning states: “The weather is potentially dangerous.

“The weather phenomena that have been forecast are not unusual, but be attentive if you intend to practice activities exposed to meteorological risks.

“Keep informed about the expected meteorological conditions and do not take any avoidable risk.”

In France, an orange weather warning suggesting danger has been issued in Charente Maritime. Authorities advise those in the area to: “Be very vigilant and keep regularly informed about the detailed expected meteorological conditions.

“Be aware of the risks that might be unavoidable”.

Persistent rains are expected to lash the area, with the deluge already resulting in a widespread power cut in parts of the country as rising water levels flooded entire towns. An estimated 14,000 homes were affected.

Most of Italy remains under a yellow weather warning, though Abruzzo, Campania, Lazio, Umbria and Basilicata have a severe warning in place due to high-impact winds.

Both residents and visitors to the area are warned to be prepared.

The Meteoalarm website says: “Take precautions and keep up to date with the latest weather forecast. Expect some disruption to daily routines.”

At present, the FCO has not put any specialist weather warnings in place for France or Italy, though its website advises: “If you’re abroad and you need emergency help from the UK government, contact the nearest British embassy, consulate or high commission.”

Amelie is just the latest in a string of storms that have battered the areas, causing death and destruction over the last few months.

Looking to the week ahead, the weather is likely to persist across all Spain, France and Italy.

Tourists should stay up to date with developments in the area they are visiting and follow the advice of any relevant authority.
