Get the tissues ready, because this beautiful tale of dog love will leave you sobbing.

When he was just a pup, Arnold, a Weimaraner who lives in Perth, Australia, was mauled by a German Shepherd outside his house.

The experience left the pooch, who was already suffering from separation anxiety, absolutely traumatised – as he became scared around other dogs, particularly large or loud ones.

It became obvious to owner Carolyn Manalis that something needed to be done.

And so came Frank, a miniature Dachshund who wouldn’t be intimidating to Arnold, given his tiny size (he’s 30kg lighter).

At first, Frank was meant to provide emotional support – but soon enough the two dogs became best buds, who do everything together.

Carolyn says their relationship has helped Arnold let go of his anxiety and become more independent.

‘Frank has helped Arnold regain his confidence to be able to play and wrestle, whilst learning that this doesn’t always mean he’s going to get hurt or attacked,’ she said.

‘Having a little friend to play with has been the perfect therapy for Arnold to heal.’

It’s a mutually beneficial friendship, with Arnold taking on a parenting role for his sassy Dachshund friend and showing him the ropes at home.

Carolyn said: ‘We swear Frank thinks Arnold is his Dad. Being the second child, he definitely didn’t’ get as much training and attention as the first.

‘Most of what he has learnt, he has learnt from Arnold.

‘Frank copies everything Arnold does, to the point where if Arnold barks or makes a sound, Frank will mimic it directly after, almost like a parrot!

‘Arnold taught Frank how to be house trained, how to bark at intruders, how to chase a ball, how to stand and wait to have his collar and leash put on, how to sit and wait before crossing the road. Everywhere Arnold walks, Frank will follow.

‘The bond these two dogs have is just insanely beautiful.

‘They are so connected and loving and supportive of one another.

‘If one ever cries, the other one is there in half a second to check they’re okay. Their love is unconditional, regardless of their size or breed.

‘The love they also provide to us is just something you can’t get from humans.

‘They are so affectionate and full of joy and just make our lives whole.’

Pass the tissues, please.
