Transport to ‘whole new world’ at Fife’s Pettycur Bay for dream holiday with family friendly activities and stunning views

WE were only an hour from home but as the waves crashed down just below us we might as well have been in a different world.

And for that reason alone, peaceful Pettycur Bay in Fife left a lasting impression.

If we looked really closely we could have picked out our home town Musselburgh in the distance across the Forth.

And that was actually important to us.

With five-year-old Evie and seven-month-old Josh we didn’t want to go too far.

But at the same time we obviously wanted to feel as if we were on a proper holiday.

So in that respect Pettycur ticked a lot of the boxes for us before we had even packed the car.

And the pleasing thing is once we made the short trip over the Queensferry Crossing it didn’t disappoint.

At first glance the caravans look as if they are in danger of toppling off the hilltop and into the water.

A closer inspection reveals modern living areas, all with stunning views out to sea.

GO: PETTYCUR BAY

A WEEK’S stay at Pettycur Bay, near Kinghorn, Fife, is from £371-£509 for a family of four until December 13. See pettycur.co.uk

As bases go it was just what we needed, with the neat kitchen area ideal for preparing meals.

Supplies could be picked up at the small shop in the Bay Hotel, less than a five-minute walk away.

And with a swimming pool, bar and restaurant there was actually no need to venture outside the park.

But we were in a mood for exploration — and Pettycur’s location can’t be beaten for that.

 Escape busy city life

You can see all three bridges and Edinburgh in the distance and get there within half-an-hour.

Living where we do, we are lucky enough to visit the capital’s castle, zoo, museums and galleries on a regular basis.

So we instead decided to head the other way and have a look at what the surrounding area had to offer.

Our first stop was the Scottish Deer Centre in the Bow of Fife, 20 minutes from the park.

The award-winning attraction boasts 13 species of deer, which you even get to feed.

Spread over 55 acres, the recently renovated park has a number of animals long lost from the Scottish countryside.

They include wolves, lynx and Scottish wildcats as well as a European brown bear.

From there it was only a further 20 minutes to St Andrews, a long-time favourite of the Martin clan.

A fun afternoon of putting on the Himalayas next to the Old Course was followed by a magnificent fish tea at the Tailend restaurant on the main drag.

And, tired out and happy, we then returned to the caravan, where we were able to chill out on the veranda.

The following day began with a dip in the on-site pool and a trip to the games room on the way out.

Then mum and dad decided to relive their youth with a jaunt to the Burntisland amusements, less than a five-minute drive from the park.

As kids we’d get the train over the water to spend an afternoon at the shows with our folks.

In truth, little has changed there over the past 20 years — but that’s no bad thing.

Evie certainly enjoyed herself.

And dinner in the excellent Horizons restaurant in the Bay Hotel was the perfect way to end the day.

The new-look venue was refurbished earlier this year.

The restaurant recently picked up a Taste of Scotland award for its commitment to using local produce.

And between the burger, lamb and pasta all of our needs were suitably catered for.

The viewing terrace gives guests the option of sitting outside on a summer’s night to watch the sun set.

And upstairs the new Sports Bar and family area was the ideal place to unwind.

The next day, when it was time to leave, it was a simple job to load up the car and we were back home within the hour.

But as short breaks go this was far and away the ideal choice for us.
