“Ajax have already made it clear that they will not be auctioning the player but rather let him go where he would prefer to play.”

If United are not in Europe’s elite competition they could struggle to attract the likes of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

7.30am UPDATE: Man Utd transfer plans uncovered

Manchester United have conceded the need to give their squad a bigger than expected summer shake up after losing further ground in the race for a top four finish.

Both new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward had originally intended to stick to a “three in, three out” summer window.

But with evidence mounting that the current squad is not fit for purpose to meet ambitious targets, the board are ready to sanction a bigger overhaul than had originally been planned.

United are well aware they need defensive reinforcements with one of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Raphael Varane or Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly potential targets.

Further forward United remain interested in England starlet Declan Rice from West Ham and keen to bring Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund to Old Trafford.

United are also thought to have considered a move for Ivan Rakitic, who looks set to lose his starting spot at Barcelona to new arrival Frenkie de Jong.

6am UPDATE: Liverpool told to sign Toby Alderweireld

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has revealed who he would love to partner Virgil van Dijk in defence.

“One hundred per cent this guy’s going,” Nicol said of Tottenham ace Toby Alderweireld.

“We just don’t know where it is.

“Again, this is a player who I think most teams in the world would want as their centre-back.

“I wouldn’t mind him at Liverpool alongside Van Dijk, I think that would be a great pairing.

“So yes, he’s going to leave. Where does he go? I guess it’s up to him.

“If he wants to move for money, he will go for the highest bidder regardless.

“But if he wants trophies, and you’ve got someone like Varane wanting to leave Real Madrid, I wouldn’t be shocked if that was where he turns up.

“Yeah [he will have a lot of teams to pick from], no question.”
