Transfer news LIVE: Sunday May 12

  • Arsenal and Tottenham have battled it out for a Barcelona misfit – now there’s a winner
  • Man Utd will be offered the chance to offload one of their struggling stars this summer
  • Liverpool have been told by Reds legend Steve Nicol who to target to bolster their squad
  • Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri might have no choice about keeping a key player in west London

11.00 UPDATE: Liverpool transfer advice

Harry Redknapp agrees with Steve Nicol on the sort of player Liverpool need to sign this summer.

“Well I think you can improve any team,” Redknapp said. “But what I would say is the back four is young, with [Joe] Gomez to come in as well.

“That is together there, with the goalkeeper, for the next seven, eight years. What a great basis for a football club to work from.

“The front three are just amazing. Maybe [they need] a little bit of creativity in the middle of the park but everybody can improve somewhere.”

“Everyone at Celtic would like to thank Lee, who joined the club in March 2017, for his contribution to the club and we wish him the very best for the future.

“The existing staff within Celtic’s scouting and recruitment department will continue to work closely with club management on the identification of players who can benefit the club.

“The club has already commenced the process to appoint a new Head of Recruitment, something which will be completed as soon as possible.”

08.50 UPDATE: Liverpool raid on Chelsea?

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson would love to see Jurgen Klopp prise Reece James away from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

“Recruitment is the biggest thing for any club now and I don’t think Klopp will go mad in the transfer market this summer,” Lawrenson told the Daily Star.

“But I tell you who I’ve seen – and I don’t think they could easily get him – the right-back at Wigan, on loan from Chelsea, Reece James.

“In that league he makes it look so ridiculously easy. I think he could make the step up. But of course he belongs to Chelsea at the moment.”

08.25 UPDATE: Man City decision

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has told friends he is planning to stay at the Etihad until at least the summer of 2021.

Express Sport can exclusively reveal the Spaniard has decided not to even mull over his future as he closes in on a domestic treble.

City travel to Brighton today knowing a win will secure Premier League glory to add to their prior Carabao Cup success.

The Citizens are set to face Watford in this month’s FA Cup final – a tournament Guardiola is yet to win.

Guardiola is desperate to win the Champions League with City and is showing no sign of leaving until that task is completed.

07.30 UPDATE: Five Man Utd deals

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could add as many as five fresh faces to his Old Trafford squad this summer.

Ed Woodward is set to back Solskjaer as he looks to overhaul United’s playing staff which has already had hundreds of millions spent on it.

ESPN claim insiders close to United have revealed a quintet of new signings could rock up in the north west as part of the rebuild.

Express Sport understands Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, West Ham’s Declan Rice and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly are firmly in United’s sights.

07.10 UPDATE: Real Madrid to West Ham move

West Ham and Real Madrid have begun negotiations over a deal for Bernabeu outcast Dani Ceballos, Express Sport understands.

Ceballos has no future at Real and will be allowed to leave when the transfer window opens again for around £20m.

The midfielder has failed to make his mark in the Spanish capital since joining Real from La Liga rivals Real Betis.

However, Manuel Pellegrini is prepared to offer him a fresh start as he looks to take West Ham to the next level.

07.00 UPDATE: Chelsea exit EXCLUSIVE

Chelsea could be forced to wave goodbye to Olivier Giroud with Nice targeting the soon-to-be out-of-contract striker.

Express Sport understands Patrick Vieira is eager to lure his fellow former Arsenal ace to the south of France.

And that will come as a blow to Maurizio Sarri, who has seen Giroud score an impressive 10 Europa League goals this season.

Sarri had expected the 32-year-old to sign a new deal, but the chance to return to his homeland could prove too enticing.

06.30 UPDATE: Liverpool order

Liverpool must target Leicester midfielder James Maddison to add some creativity to their workhorse midfield.

That is the opinion of Anfield hero Steve Nicol, who wants to see Jurgen Klopp tweak his team’s approach next year.

“Klopp’s recent three in the middle of the park for Liverpool, over the last couple of years particularly, has been about gaining possession back, about closing the opposition back, about working really hard and then getting the ball to the front three,” Nicol told ESPN.

“I would love to see a little change in that with somebody like Maddison, who no question has already shown in the Premier League, from the middle of the park, he can open defences up, he can create chances.”

06.00 UPDATE: £90m Man Utd plot

Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to hand Manchester United almost all of the £90m they committed to paying Everton for Romelu Lukaku.

Express Sport understands Parc des Princes chiefs have identified the misfiring forward as a replacement for Edinson Cavan.

That may come as music to the ears of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has found it hard to accommodate the Belgium international at times.

Lukaku is also on the radar of Inter Milan having previously spoken of his desire to play in Serie A one day.

05.30 UPDATE: Arsenal vs Tottenham scrap

Arsenal have lost out to Tottenham having fought it out for the signature of Malcom, Express Sport can reveal.

The Barcelona misfit has made it clear to Nou Camp chiefs that he would rather head to Spurs than their north London rivals.

Malcom now looks set to become Tottenham’s first senior signing since Lucas Moura was snapped up in January 2018.

The versatile Brazilian can play across the frontline but has failed to force his way into Barcelona’s first-team plans.
