Train to Busan 2: Peninsula Is Coming Summer 2020

The upcoming Train to Busan sequel, titled Peninsula (or Bando in Korean}, has reportedly been set for a release date next summer. As the original has become one of the most popular zombie movies across the world since its initial release in 2016, it wasn’t surprising when the news of a sequel was first announced last year. According to a new report from HallyuLife, a rep from the movie’s distribution company NEW said they were ” preparing for the market release by summer 2020, but the schedule for international release has not been decided yet.” Additionally, another new report claims the movie will premiere on Aug. 12, 2020.

From South Korea, Train to Busan is directed by Yeon Sang-ho and written by Park Joo-suk. As the title suggests, the zombie movie is set primarily on a moving train traveling towards Busan, with the passengers fighting for their lives against the undead. Gong Yoo stars as Seok-woo, a fund manager heading to Busan with his young daughter Su-an, played by Kim Su-an. Also starring in the cult classic horror flick are Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Choi Woo-shik, Sohee, and Kim Eui-sung. Graphic violence aside, the movie is perhaps best known for its incredibly emotional ending.

Train to Busan was a big success when it was first released in its home country, serving as the first movie to break the audience record of 10 million viewers in South Korea. Additionally, it became the highest-grossing Korean movie in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore, ultimately grossing nearly $100 million in global ticket sales against a budget of less than $9 million. The movie was also a very big hit with critics as well, holding a 93% Certified Fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, which is a score atypical of most zombie movies. While Train to Busan is definitely filled with gore and not a movie to watch for the squeamish, most viewers seem to appreciate the intense and touching story told in the film. Train to Busan 2 began shooting in 2019.

Peninsula won’t technically be the first follow-up to Train to Busan, as the popular zombie movie had an animated prequel which was released less than a month after the original movie. Called Seoul Station, the animation is written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho, who also directed Train to Busan. The story follows a father searching for his daughter, discovering her to be a prostitute just before a zombie outbreak is unleashed in Seoul. Additionally, the original movie is reportedly getting remade in English from producer James Wan and writer Gary Dauberman.

If these reports are accurate, Peninsula will be released on Aug. 12, 2020. Yeon Sang-ho returns to direct the movie, with the new cast including Kang Dong Won, Lee Jung Hyun, Lee Re, Kwon Hae Hyo, Kim Min Jae, and Goo Kyo Hwan. This news comes to us from HallyuLife.
