Town Hall Hotel, Bethnal Green – review

Located a five-minute walk from Bethnal Green Tube station and under 15 minutes to both Victoria Park and Broadway Market, The Town Hall Hotel makes for a cool and quirky East London base to explore the surrounding hipster area.

Style

Set in a former town hall which retains many of its original Edwardian period features, such as the grand marble staircase, ornate pillars and tiled flooring, the dog-friendly hotel also boasts a Michelin-starred restaurant, chic heated swimming pool and original wooden-panelled council chamber which is a popular wedding venue.

The style is a blend of elements from different eras, art deco touches and retro mid-century furnishings are offset by the building’s original glass domes and large floor to ceiling windows. Wandering along the corridors you’ll notice plenty of intriguing, and in some cases utterly bizarre, objects dotted around the premises – you’ll want to Instagram it all. A nice touch is the Smeg fridge which sits in the lobby stocked with fresh milk for guests to use as they please, just don’t forget to pick some up before heading to your room.

Which room

There are accommodation options to suit every type of traveller, including double rooms, studios and one and two bed apartments (sleeping upto five), the latter two both feature fully equipped kitchenettes and living spaces featuring vintage furniture.

Inside, the rooms are light, spacious and minimalist. In our studio, crisp white bed linen contrasted with flashes of orange velvet on the cushions and sofa upholstery. A sheepskin rug was placed on the retro parquet flooring next to the bedside to keep the stylish space feeling cosy. An iPhone dock and Musetti coffee-maker was also provided, as were plush toiletries by organic skincare brand Grown Alchemist.

Food and drink

There are two restaurants and a bar on the premises. The Corner Room, led by chef Simon Shand, serves up seasonal dishes throughout the day, while you can grab a cocktail and light bites in the  Assemble Room. Both also serve breakfast, though with abundant brunch hot spots in nearby Shoreditch you’ll be spoilt for choice.

The star of the show is Da Terra, a fine dining restaurant offering Latin American cuisine headed up by chefs Paulo Airaudo and Rafael Cagali. Having opened in January 2019, the restaurant and bar was just awarded its first Michelin star. Well worth booking in during your stay, read Fay Maschler’s full review here.

With its large skylight overhead and smart brass fittings, the 15m heated pool makes for a great spot to shake off a late night, there’s also a small fitness area to work out in. On weekday mornings, the hotel arranges a free shuttle bus service to Liverpool Street and Bank stations.
