Tough guy cop Gene Hunt to make TV comeback for third series of time-travel saga

Fire up the Quattro – tough guy cop Gene Hunt is on his way back to our screens.

Plans are under way for a third series of TV’s time-travel cop saga.

Following hit shows Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes Called The Final Chapter, it would again feature favourites DCI Gene Hunt, DI Alex Drake and DCI Sam Tyler.

Co-writer Matthew Graham hinted at its return on Twitter. He teased: “When you wonder who will be coming back for The Final Chapter – think Avengers Assemble!”

He added: “We would never make another Mars unless we really had something to say and could push the envelope all over again. Finally, we have something.”

Aired in 2006, Life On Mars featured John Simm as modern-day cop DCI Sam Tyler, who “woke up” from a coma after a car accident to find himself in the 1970s.

He found himself working alongside politically-incorrect cop Gene Hunt, played by Philip Glenister, who raced around in his Audi Quattro.

The follow-up Ashes To Ashes in 2009 starred Keeley Hawes as DI Alex Drake, who was shot on duty and woke up stuck in the 1980s. The final series is set to run for four or five episodes, with action taking place in London and Manchester “partially in the 70s, partially in the 80s and mostly in an alternate now”.

A BBC source said: “While there are no firm plans at this stage Life On Mars was a much-loved BBC show and we’d never say never to more!”
