We run the rule over the two teams after an entertaining game in north London
Ajax continued their dream run in this season’s Champions League by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at their new stadium.
The biggest match in Tottenham’s modern history began in inauspicious fashion, with Ajax dominating possession and creating numerous goal-scoring chances.
And midfielder Donny van de Beek was quick to capitalise when he collected Hakim Ziyech’s sublime through-ball and calmly slotted past Spurs skipper Hugo Lloris.
Tottenham’s night then turned from bad to worse after Jan Vertonghen suffered what looked to be a serious head injury, although Mauricio Pochettino’s team did improve in the second-half.
Spurs flooded forward but could not find an equaliser — although the fact they restricted this impressive Ajax side to just one goal at least gives them some hope of overturning the deficit in Amsterdam next week.
