Tottenham transfer news: Jan Vertonghen admits he is in the dark over new contract

Jan Vertonghen has reaffirmed his commitment to Tottenham but admits he does not know whether he will receive a new contract.

Vertonghen is one of a number of Tottenham players with deals set to expire at the end of the 2019/20 season after the club exercised an option to extend his current contract by a year.

The Belgian has not, however, yet received any new offer of a contract extension.

“I just want to focus on this year, I know I have got one year left so I know a lot of questions will be asked,” he said.“I have said it before, I am very happy at the club. The supporters have been great for me, the manager has improved me a lot and has a lot of confidence in me.

“I feel very, very good physically so I am not sure what is going to happen this year, I can only say I am happy where I am at and I feel the support from the manager, team-mates and the squad.”

Tottenham have not yet signed a centre back this summer, and while Vertonghen’s compatriot Toby Alderweireld‘s release clause lapsed without offer, he is another with a contract set to expire at the end of the coming season.

He may yet leave before the window’s close, though Vertonghen is hoping his international teammate remains at the club.

“You never know but I have played for so many years with Toby, he is a very good player and a great guy for the group,” the centre-half said of the man who often partners him in the heart of the Tottenham defence.

To further complicate matters, Juan Foyth suffered an ankle injury in Tottenham’s Audi Cup triumph over Bayern Munich, with the defender set to miss “many weeks” according to manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The club’s inactivity has many supporters worried, with Foyth’s injury potentially leaving them thin at right-back after the departure of Kieran Trippier, and efforts to extract Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis and Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham have not yet borne fruit.

But Vertonghen, 32, has assured fans that the current squad is ready even if there are no further reinforcements.

“We just look at ourselves, we want to be in the best shape possible, whoever comes in or goes out that is out of our hands,” he added.

“We have got a great squad with great guys and whoever is here is ready to play for Spurs.”
