Tottenham told they face "a challenge" to keep Harry Kane amid Man Utd transfer links

Tottenham face a fight to hold on to Harry Kane this summer, according to the former Chelsea and Republic of Ireland forward Tony Cascarino.

Kane was the subject of fresh rumours linking him with a summer switch to Manchester United on Wednesday, amid claims that he is less than confident in the rebuilding job currently going on at Spurs under Jose Mourinho.

The forward – who says he will be fit to play for England at Euro 2020 despite currently being sidelined with a hamstring injury – is rumoured to be considering a future away from Spurs, and Cascarino can understand why.

“It’s going to be a challenge for Tottenham to keep Harry; he’s been brilliant for Spurs, he’s signed a long-term contract and he could be there until he is 29,” Cascarino told talkSPORT .

“But what do you do if you really believe you’re going to be at a club just playing to be ‘also-rans?’

“Harry is too good to be an ‘also-ran’. Alan Shearer chose not to go to Manchester United , played for his boyhood club Newcastle .

“He did win the Premier League, with Blackburn, and he’s been part of FA Cups.

“But to not win on a regular basis when you’re a player of the highest quality, and many clubs would want you around the world, Harry has to go for that.”

But instead of United, Cascarino suggested that Kane could opt to move abroad.

“Harry has been very loyal to Spurs,” he continued.

“Like Spurs fans, he expected to win something and he hasn’t achieved that.

“If Real Madrid or Juventus – especially if [Cristiano] Ronaldo is not going to be at Juve next season – and they came in for Harry and offered big money for Harry, it would be hard for him to turn them down now.
