Spurs are looking to secure their first major signing of the summer after submitting a £53m bid for Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, according to BBC Sport.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to Spurs as well as Manchester United over the past few weeks but it now appears as though the Champions League finalists are accelerating their efforts to sign him.

Although Spurs’ £53m offer for Lo Celso would eclipse their previous record signing – £42m for Davinson Sanchez in 2017 – it has been reported that Real Betis are holding out for closer to the Argentine’s £88m release clause.

Lo Celso enjoyed an exceptional campaign with Betis after signing from PSG, scoring 16 goals and registering six assists in 45 matches in all competitions as the club finished 10th in La Liga and reached the last-32 of the Europa League.

Despite making 48 appearances under Unai Emery for PSG during the 2017-18 season, Lo Celso was deemed surplus to requirements by his successor Thomas Tuchel and was allowed to join Betis on a season-long loan in August.

Following Lo Celso’s inspirational performances in midfield, Betis took the option to make the deal permanent in April in a deal worth £22m with the midfield signing a four-year contract, although he could soon be on the move once more.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his squad for next season, calling on his chairman Daniel Levy to ‘operate in a different way’ following successive transfer windows without a signing.

A key area of the squad that requires strengthening is central midfield following the departure of Mousa Dembele to Guangzhou R&F in January, while Christian Eriksen has been tipped to join Real Madrid as he approaches the final year of his contract.

Lo Celso started his career with Rosario Central in his homeland prior to moving to PSG in 2016 and has been capped 10 times by Argentina.
