Tottenham player ratings vs Man City: Son brilliant, Trippier awful, unsung hero earns 8

Raheem Sterling sent City into an early lead with a brilliant finish after four minutes but Son Heung-min struck back as his shot crept under Ederson.

The South Korean then put Spurs ahead with a sublime curling effort but City were level when Bernardo Silva’s effort deflected.

The chaotic opening continued when Sterling got his second of the night, tucking in Kevin De Bruyne’s cross at the back post before Sergio Aguero made it 4-2 after the break.

Substitute Fernando Llorente bundled home a corner to put Spurs in the driving seat before Sterling scored again in the final seconds, only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR and send Spurs through on away goals.

Express Sport has rated how the Tottenham players performed in their clash with Manchester City, but do you agree?

Tottenham Hotspur player ratings vs Manchester City – Champions League

GK: Hugo Lloris – 8

Looked to be in for a tough night after a frenetic opening salvo, but came out of the match with plenty of credit despite shipping four goals.

Denied Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne with a couple of superb stops which ensured Spurs progressed.

RB: Kieran Trippier – 3

Completely torn apart by a rampant Sterling in the opening 45 minutes and will be having sleepless nights for weeks about this match.

Stepped up his performance after the break but still looked the weak link as his positioning was completely exposed.

CB: Toby Alderweireld – 7

Under intense pressure for much of the match but kept his concentration well, although he came within a whisker of playing Aguero onside in the closing seconds.

Made a brave block from the Argentine in the first half and can be pleased with his resolute display.

CB: Jan Vertonghen – 6

Formed an imposing barrier with Alderweireld as City poured forward towards the end, although the Belgian wasn’t the only one shellshocked in the early stages.

LB: Danny Rose – 8

Unlucky to deflect the second past Lloris and was left stranded by his team-mates for the third, but showed his class with an unbelievable sliding block to deny Bernanrdo Silva.

Not a high-profile star of the side, but his defensive performance was vital in the win.

CDM: Victor Wanyama – 5

Inconsistent with moments of quality followed by bizarre decision, and was made to look pedestrian by De Bruyne in full flight.

Still working his way back to full match sharpness but just about kept his head above the water here.

CM: Moussa Sissoko – 4

Unable to stem the early tide as City dominated midfield and was withdrawn before the break due to injury.

CM: Dele Alli – 6

Played with a broken hand and his driving run set up the first equaliser, but was then forced deeper after Sissoko’s injury and given a thorough workout by De Bruyne.

CAM: Christian Eriksen – 5

Didn’t look after the ball well at all but it was his pass that played in Son for Spurs’ second.

ST: Lucas Moura – 6

His pace had the potential to cause problems and the Brazilian nicked the ball well off Aymeric Laporte for the second.

ST: Son Heung-min – 9

Slightly fortunate to beat Ederson with his first goal but his second was superb and the South Korean was a shining light for Spurs, harrying and harassing all evening.

SUB: Fernando Llorente (on for Sissoko, 41 mins) – 7

Poor clearance allowed Aguero in but that will be forgotten after his bundled finish.

SUB: Ben Davies (on for Moura, 81 mins) – N/A

Brought on to batten down the hatches.

SUB: Davinson Sanchez (on for Rose, 90 mins) – N/A

His introduction wasted precious seconds.
