Tottenham have three advantages over AC Milan in transfer battle for Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Tottenham have been linked with a move for Zlatan Ibrahimovic during the January transfer window.

The move would see Harry Kane finally have some decent competition for the main centre-forward role at the club.

But, AC Milan are also believed to be interested in signing the 38-year-old, whose contract at LA Galaxy expires next month.

The Serie A side have made an offer to the former Manchester United and PSG striker, but it’s Spurs have who have the upper hand in negotiations.

Champions League

Tottenham are still in a solid position to qualify for the next stage of the Champions League; Europe’s elite competition.

Spurs’ inclusion in the draw would surely be an attraction for Ibrahimovic, who is still yet to win the Champions League.

Meanwhile, AC Milan are involved in any European competition this season, and are already looking unlikely to qualify for next season’s campaigns.

They’re currently 14th in Serie A, having lost seven of their first 12 league matches.

Jose Mourinho

Both lively characters, Ibrahimovic and Mourinho have a very good working relationship.

They’ve worked together at United and Inter Milan, with Ibrahimovic admitted that he wants to give “everything” for the manager.

“He formed an attachment to me even before we met,” Ibrahimovic wrote in his book. “He would become a guy I was basically willing to die for.

“No matter how happy I was going to Barca, it was sad to leave Mourinho. That guy is special.”

Financial Fair Play

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is notoriously shrewd in his transfer business. He prefers to avoid spending huge sums of money on individuals, meaning Spurs’ bank balance looks healthy.

In Italy, AC Milan have had a number of problems with Financial Fair Play (FFP) over the past few years.

Their huge expenditures on Leonardo Bonucci and Andre Silva in 2017 meant they were in trouble with UEFA, and were banned from competing in this season’s Europa League as a result.

AC Milan are still trying to sort out their finances, and they may – quite simply – not even be able to afford Ibrahimovic’s wages.
