Tottenham eye £60m transfer of Giovani Lo Celso as potential Christian Eriksen replacement

Tottenham are to step up their attempts to land the £60million-rated Real Betis playmaker Giovani Lo Celso in what would represent a stunning statement of intent.

The 23-year-old Argentinian is understood to be interested in working with his compatriot, Mauricio Pochettino.

The Spurs boss is also a big admirer of the Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele. Pochettino already has strong competition, however, from a number of top European clubs.

Lo Celso is the player for whom Spurs are locked in negotiations. A bid of £53million has already been rejected for the rising star who netted 16 goals this season and provided six assists in his 45 appearances.

Betis, who exercised an option to make his loan from PSG permanent for just £20million, now want his £88million release clause met.

Spurs, however, are hoping to reach a figure acceptable to the Spanish club.

Lo Celso comes from Rosario, where Pochettino famously played for Newell’s Old Boys. He is in his country’s squad for this summer’s Copa America this summer.

He is seen as a potential replacement for Real Madrid target Christian Eriksen, who has a year remaining on his contract and has yet to agree terms on a new deal.

There is also uncertainty over the futures of defenders Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier.

Spurs’ windfall for reaching their first Champions League final would boost Pochettino’s transfer budget this summer.

The Spurs boss is impressed by Leicester playmaker James Maddison, with a number of clubs keeping tabs on the former Norwich man.

Maddison, 22, scored seven goals and bagged seven assists for the Foxes in the Premier League and Pochettino feels he will only get better.
