Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino issued January transfers demand in Man City warning

Former Tottenham star Paul Gascoigne thinks Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino can secure a top-four finish this season but doesn’t believe they are still not strong enough to compete for the Premier League title.

Gascoigne, who won the FA Cup with Spurs back in 1991, feels Pochettino’s current squad doesn’t have strength in depth when compared to Manchester City and Liverpool.

And the former England midfielder is particularly concerned about who would replace Harry Kane if the striker suffered another injury.

When Kane was injured last season Pochettino relied on playing either midfielder Lucas Moura out of position or selecting Fernando Llorente as a target man.

However, the 34-year-old Spaniard is no longer an option for Pochettino as he left Spurs in the summer when the club choose not to renew his £100,000-a-week wage deal.

Pochettino had reportedly been keen on keeping Llorente on for another season, but the former Spain international rejected the idea of reducing his salary.

“I have seen the players in Spurs academy and they have some unbelievable players coming through. But the big question is going to be what happens if Harry Kane gets injured? Gascoigne told football.london.

“Who is going to replace him?

“Man City have got players to replace every position on the field. Tottenham don’t.

“Mauricio Pochettino needs to buy again in the next window and get a couple of players in.”

Tottenham have a win, a loss and a draw in their opening three games and they now face a short trip across the capital to take on Arsenal on Sunday.

Liverpool are the only club in the Premier League to have maintained their winning streak, with City dropping points as a result of their 2-2 draw against Spurs.

However, Gascoigne feels Pep Guardiola’s City will ultimately win the title and predicts the Reds will once again finish in second place.

The former Lazio and Rangers midfielder, thinks Tottenham will improve on last season’s performance and move up to third, while he thinks Manchester United will pip Arsenal and Chelsea to fourth place.

“Liverpool are looking strong as well but I cannot see anyone stopping Man City,” Gascoigne added.

“They are just going to keep on buying and it’s quite scary.

“I think it will be Man City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United. I think Arsenal are playing good football as well.”
