Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly interested in signing Inter Milan misfit Diego Godin in the summer transfer window.

Godin was regarded as one of the finest central defenders in Europe during his peak years at Atletico Madrid but the 34-year-old has failed to live up to expectations at Inter and fallen out of favour under head coach Antonio Conte.

The Uruguay international is expected to leave the Serie A giants at the end of the 2019/20 campaign which has put a number of teams on red alert, including Manchester United who were also keen during Mourinho’s tenure.

It’s understood Mourinho sanctioned a £22.5million bid to sign Godin back in 2018 but the centre-back just used United’s offer get a bumper new deal with Atleti.

According to The Daily Mirror, Mourinho has not been put off by his previous rejection or Godin’s underwhelming spell at the San Siro and is preparing to compete with his former club for the centre-half’s signature over the coming months.

Mourinho is determined to add an experienced defensive leader to his dressing room, with Spurs preparing for life without Jan Vertonghen who looks set for a free transfer when his contract expires.

Valencia are also weighing up move for Godin, whose contract expires in 2022.

Though Vertonghen has not ruled out the possibility that he could stay at Spurs beyond the summer, he dropped a huge hint that he could be set for the exit door in an interview with De Kleedkamer this week.

‘I will really have to decide what I want in my career,’ he said.

‘I have to start thinking about where I want to live, what language I want to learn, what culture I still want to live in and also, very importantly, which competitions and prizes I still want to win.

‘I don’t want to regret anything in my career.’
