Conservative MP Nick Boles has been branded “creepy” after describing Labour’s Jess Phillips as “irresistible”.
Writing on Twitter, Mr Boles said that there is something about the Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley that he finds “irresistible”, before saying he would “walk over hot coals for her”.
Posting a Times profile on Ms Phillips, which quotes the Labour MP as saying she thinks she would be a good Prime Minister, Mr Boles added: “And yes she would be a great Prime Minister.”
Hundreds of people have responded to the MP, who is gay and married to Shay Meshulam, with many calling the tweet “creepy” and others saying: “There is something not right about this.”
However, not all found the tweet inappropriate, with one person replying: “Bit odd to see a Tory MP worshipping at the feet of Labour woman politician, but hey, we live in unprecedented times.”
Another added: “Time for all sane politicians to work together as a “Party of Sanity” and start helping the UK to heal. Even a small centre block in UK politics can make a difference.”
“This is so good to hear from a Tory MP,” another wrote. “Beginning of the end of tribal politics at last.”
Although The Times quotes Ms Phillips saying she feels she “can’t leave the Labour Party without rolling the dice one more time”, others suggested the pair should both join the Independent Group.
Councillor for East Brighton Warren Morgan, who quit the Labour Party earlier in 2019, tweeted: “Perhaps both of you should join the Independent Group and make that happen.”
