Tory leadership: WHY WAIT? Jeremy Hunt says UK could quit EU BEFORE deadline

The foreign secretary launched his first official leadership campaign video on Twitter this morning under the slogan “unite to win”. Mr Hunt warned the UK could be “stuck in a paralysis” if Brexit is carried out badly, as the EU may block a better deal and UK Parliament could block a no deal. He then went on to compare those who claim “it’s impossible” to pass a deal in this time to the scepticism surrounding the London 2012 Olympics, money for the NHS and the war in Yemen.

In the campaign video Mr Hunt warned the UK could be “stuck in a paralysis that leads to a general election” if Brexit negotiations are badly handled.

He said if this happens, Britain risks electing “the most dangerous leader of the Labour Party we’ve ever had in our lifetimes” as Prime Minister.

He said: “We could be stuck in a paralysis that leads to a general election and puts into Downing Street the most left-wing, the most dangerous leader of the Labour Party we’ve ever had in our lifetimes.”

But the foreign secretary claims he has “the plan to deliver Brexit”, and claims a deal could be arranged before the October 31 deadline.

He attempted to shut down those that claim a deal before October would be “impossible”, by stating: “I like to prove people wrong”.

Mr Hunt said: “Lots of people say its impossible, but then they said the London Olympics would be a disaster, they said that there’d never be any extra money for the NHS, they said you’d never get the warring parties round the table in Yemen.”

11 Tory politicians have officially put their hat in the ring for the leadership race.

Two candidates, James Cleverly and Kit Malthouse have already dropped out of the contest.

According to bookmakers Paddy Power, Jeremy Hunt was fourth in the race on June 3, with odds of 11/1.

Boris Johnson is the current favourite with odds of 6/4, shortly followed by Michael Gove at 7/2.

Mr Hunt trails Andrea Leadsom, who is in third place with odds of 6/1.

Prime Minister Theresa May will step down as Tory leader this Friday, June 7.
