Top Ten Tuesday: Video Games That Should Become Movies – White Wolf

You might have seen the movie Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will be released one month from tomorrow, but what other video game franchises should be made into films? This week’s Top Ten Tuesday goes over video games that should become live-action movies.

10. Castlevania

Castlevania feels like a perfect video game to be made into a movie because it’s a very popular series with many releases over the past 30+ years, yet many average people have never even heard of it—that could lead to a great mix of a rabid group of fans and intrigued average movie-goers. Yes, there’s a Castlevania animated television series on Netflix, but the gothic-horror story should come to the big screen in non-animated fashion.

9. The Legend of Zelda

Another long-running video game that started in the mid-80s, The Legend of Zelda has all the makings of a potential movie franchise. Hyrule is a good setting that could translate to film, and it could have a nice niche as an adventure movie suitable for most ages. The one issue is the fact that the protagonist, Link, doesn’t talk in the game, which could be tough to work around.

8. Mortal Kombat

This would not be suitable for all ages. For Mortal Kombat to work as a movie, it’d have to be very violent, which didn’t happen for the two PG-13 films released in the 1990s. However, with R-rated adaptations like Deadpool and Logan being released in recent years, taking this to the extreme would be more acceptable today. Mortal Kombat might be the toughest of any series on the list to be turned into a movie, though, as it must craft a believable story around all the fighting that would take place.

7. Fallout

Fallout is one of the more surprising video games not to be made into a movie, as a post-apocalyptic, post-nuclear war in an alternate history—with a strong story within the open-world game—seems like it would make a great script. And multiple games in the series makes it easier to create multiple movies.

6. L.A. Noire

There are arguably too many similar Los Angeles-based neo-noir movies for L.A. Noire to work—L.A. Confidential comes to mind and might cause some confusion with people thinking it’s a prequel. But the atmosphere of L.A. Noire is fantastic, and the game’s story was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival back in 2011 ahead of its release, so there’s a lot to work with.

5. Halo

It seems like there’s been talk of a Halo movie for over a decade, but it just hasn’t come to be. The journey of Master Chief might be better played out in a video game because it’s worked so well over the years, but an ambitious director could undoubtedly create a stellar movie franchise. Steven Spielberg is leading a live-action Halo television series for Showtime, but we’ll see if that actually happens; if it does, there wouldn’t be much need for a movie.

4. Red Dead Redemption

Grant Theft Auto could be another Rockstar game turned into a movie franchise, but Red Dead Redemption would be much more realistic considering it was easier to get away with killing people during the American frontier than it is today. We could use another great Western movie actually set during the 1800s or early 1900s. Imagine someone like Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Hell or High Water, TV series Yellowstone) running/writing or directing a Red Dead Redemption movie trilogy.

3. Injustice

While there might already be too many superhero and comic-book films today, an Injustice movie franchise could be epic. Just as Joker is set to be separate from the DC Extended Universe, perhaps Warner Bros. will want to set up another separate set of films based on the popular Injustice video games. Alternate timelines set up intriguing possibilities, and the female roles would probably draw the interest of many great actresses because Injustice has magnified them despite the usual focus on Batman and Superman. Getting a budget for movies of this magnitude might be the only issue considering the money already allocated to the genre.

2. God of War

Fans and critics raved about last year’s emotional God of War for PS4, and people are looking for that kind of heart in movies today. Actors would be lining up for the role of Kratos if God of War ever made it to the big screen, and talented directors would also be drawn to the story. A Jason Mamoa-Zack Snyder—the two appear to be very fond of each other after their work in the DCEU—pairing for God of War would be insane.

1. Batman Arkham

Matt Reeves’ upcoming film The Batman is said to be of some inspiration from the Batman Arkham games, but fans would absolutely love a movie about the “World’s Greatest Detective” focusing mostly on him being a detective. The Arkham series has branched out enough that there are various possibilities—including a film set solely in Arkham Asylum for one night and a film set in Gotham City with Batman still doing a lot of detecting. Basing a Batman movie mainly off the Arkham video game would be a fresh take on the Caped Crusader.
