CGI technology is getting more mind-blowing by the day, with previously groundbreaking films like Avatar now seen as the norm.

But as the reaction to the ‘digital fur technology’ in the trailer for Cats has shown, sometimes we shouldn’t do things just because we can.

So we’re pretty chuffed that most of the action in Top Gun: Maverick is the real deal.

The trailer for the eagerly-anticipated sequel to the 1986 classic was unveiled last night at San Diego Comic Con by none other than Tom Cruise himself, and he boasted that all the fighter jet action is legit.

Surprising punters at Hall H, the 57-year-old said: ‘Top Gun is about family, about sacrifice, and it’s about aviation.

‘34 years ago I made a movie in San Diego, right here. I actually shot across the street in a restaurant. You all have asked for many, many years and I’ve travelled across the world and people have asked “when are you going to do another one?” I felt it was my responsibility to finally deliver for you.’

He went on to explain: ‘Everything you see in this film is for real.’

And co-star Jon Hamm recently said that most of what we see on screen is not CGI.

He told Collider: ‘They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen. We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical.

‘There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.’

We cannot wait.

The trailer for Top Gun 2 sees the return of Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, with the pilot being scolded for still being a Captain rather than a ‘two-star Admiral’.

There’s plenty of aerial action, Tom Cruise racing a motorbike, the return of that iconic jacket and even a funeral which we’re not ready to know about just yet.

The sequel will come out 34 years after the original – and it will need a seriously good soundtrack to come up against Berlin’s Take My Breath Away and Kenny Loggins’ Danger Zone.

Top Gun: Maverick flies into cinemas (sorry) in 2020.
