Top Boy season 3: Sully star speaks out on 'squashing cliches' around gangs

Top Boy fans rejoiced when Netflix announced a brand new series of the critically-acclaimed show after it was cancelled by Channel 4 in 2013.

Set in Summerhouse Estate in Hackney, the gritty drama follows Dushane (played by Ashley Walters) and Sully (Kane Robinson) and their underground drugs business.

When it returns, the show will be set six years after the events of the second series and now there’s a new Top Boy, Jamie (Micheal Ward).

Speaking to press including Express.co.uk, Sully star Kane revealed how the introduction of Jamie will help “squash cliches” surrounding gang culture.

He said: “The new Jamie character has moral conflicts, he’s doing bad things but really [just] to provide for his young brothers who he’s a father figure for because of dire circumstances.”

Kane remarked that he believes Top Boy can “squash some of the cliches” associated with gang violence.

“People think people wake up and just want to be bad,” he said. “‘I want to sell drugs, it’s what I’ve always wanted to do,’ it’s not like that circumstances lead to those kind of decisions.

“It will be an eye opener for some and the people that know the life already hopefully they’ve say ‘Yeah we’ll give that the stamp.'”

Dushane star Ashley agreed and added the Netflix drama can help to get people talking.

He said: “I don’t know how much Top Boy is going to change anything but what I do know is that it’s going to cause debate, create conversation and I think that’s the first steps towards dealing with it.”

The Top Boy star went on to echo Kane’s comments and explained he thought it was important to show what motivates someone to commit crime.

“What we’re trying to do is humanise these characters,” he said. “It’s important to show what motivates them to do it.

“If we can get this to every class, the masses, for them to understand, I think we’re in a better place moving forward because what is happening [at the moment is] a lot of demonisation.

“If you peel away the layers and you see what people are going through you’ll be more willing as a person to step in and help.

“That’s kind of what Top Boy’s going to do if anything.”

Top Boy originally aired on Channel 4 but the broadcaster decided to axe the show after two seasons.

Canadian rapper Drake became a huge fan of the drama and decided to help bring it back.

The first two seasons comprised of four episodes each but Netflix will drop all 10 episodes of the new series tomorrow.

Discussing Netflix’s decision to commission a third season, Ashley revealed he thought the streaming giant was the best place for the show to be.

He said: “Having ten episodes gives you the opportunity to build characters and break them down, [which is] a lot of fun.

“We had more time to take risks making the show.”

Top Boy season 3 is available to stream from Friday, September 13 on Netflix.
