Top 5 Video Games to Play this Month – January 2020 – Red Bull

Now that the new year dust has finally settled, it’s time to get back into the swing of things as we slide right into some of the gorgeous games that have released this month. There are a lot of exciting titles to look forward to this year too, so there’s no time to waste.

Now we don’t know about you, but our gaming backlog hasn’t exactly gotten shorter, and this month certainly won’t help with that problem because we’re starting the year off right with these aces!

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

Released: January 9, 2020

While console players have had some time to sink their teeth into this meaty new expansion for Monster Hunter World, Iceborne is now releasing for PC this month. The wait may have been a bummer, but the powerful master rank weapons and armour – not to mention the amazing new arctic areas and monsters – are certainly worth it.

The Iceborne expansion opens up the Hoarfrost Reach, a meticulously detailed winter wonderland full of dangerous creatures. You’ll get to explore new exotic locations, but you’ll also fight monsters in whole new ways thanks to additional moves and combos. One of the most exciting new additions – which console players should be very familiar with by now – is the clutch claw, a grappling hook that any player can use to grapple onto monsters.

Note that you need the base game in order to play the Iceborne expansion.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

Released: January 17, 2020

Bandai Namco created something special last year with Dragon Ball Fighter Z, and it seems they’re keeping the ball rolling with another possible hit in the form of Dragon Ball Z: Karkarot. But far from being just another fighting game, Dragon Ball Z: Karkarot offers a grand open world to explore, following the storyline of Goku. Although Goku won’t be the only playable character, with Vegeta, Gohan, Vegito, Trunks, and a brand new character all joining in on the action as well.

We’ve had other Dragon Ball Z action-RPGs in the past, but none of them had the scale or depth that this one reportedly will. The story will progress in line with all the major anime story arcs (and some filler content!), as well as a skill tree with which you’ll unlock more powerful actions as Goku gets stronger. When you’re not zipping around between side-quests, you can explore the world by flying from one place to another. Which you certainly will want to do because there are orbs to collect, ingredients to forage for meals, and fish to catch too.

Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Moons of Madness

Released: January 21, 2020

Having already been released on PC, this horror game with Lovecraftian undertones is now coming to consoles as well. Moons of Madness sends you on a trip to Mars, where you’ll have to come to grips with the realisation that we aren’t alone in this universe.

You’ll get to play as Shane Newehart, an engineer stationed at the Trailblazer Alpha outpost who is unaware that the company you work for is actually investigating a mysterious signal originating from this planet. You’ll soon discover that secrets abound, however, as you go about your duties. Things start going wrong in weird ways, you think you might be seeing things, and the rest of your team still hasn’t returned from their EVA mission. You’ll have to overcome your fears and a few obstacles if you want to beat this game and find out what’s really going on.

Available on: PS4, Xbox One

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

Released: January 23, 2020

We’ve played our fair share of zombie games, and let us tell you, the prospect of experiencing a life-like zombie apocalypse seems undesirable to say the least. And yet, this upcoming VR zombie survival game set in the world of the Walking Dead has gotten me amped to jump right in.

Taking place in a semi-flooded, faction-divided New Orleans, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners puts you in the middle of the action as you go up against both walkers and other survivors. According to the developers, you get to decide how you want to play the game, whether it be rushing into the fray or learning how to sneak around and hide in plain sight.

Saints & Sinners is an apt name as you’ll get to decide who you want to be in this world – a hero and friend or a lone survivor killing indiscriminately. The game will throw some curveballs your way and you’ll have to make decisions that could have big consequences later on. That certainly adds to the replayability of this reportedly 15+ hour game.

Journey to the Savage Planet

Released: January 28, 2020

This saccharinely colourful first-person exploration adventure game looks like it’s going to be an absolute blast to play. Journey to the Savage Planet is a hilariously charming game filled with strange, oddball alien creatures like the “Floopsnoot” that you will encounter as you explore your way through a strange planet.

As an employee of Kindred Aerospace, an interstellar exploration company, it’s your job to figure out if this planet is fit for human habitation. Though, apparently, that’s more of a guideline than a strictly enforced goal.

Luckily, you don’t have to go about slapping (or yes, even power-slapping) aliens alone, since the game is being sold as an online co-op experience. Although you certainly can stick to singleplayer if you want.

Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC
