Tony Blair warns Boris Johnson will be PM for 10 years if Labour doesn’t undergo ‘head-to-toe’ overhaul

BORIS Johnson will be in power for at least ten years unless stuck-in-the-past Labour undergoes a “head to toe” overhaul, Tony Blair today warns.

He will say Labour has “too often been a failure” and needs “fundamental reconstruction” if it stands a chance of ever winning power again.

The former PM is lobbing the grenade into the Labour leadership contest as Sir Keir Starmer, Rebecca Long Bailey and Lisa Nandy battle it out for the party crown.

Speaking out to mark the 120th anniversary of Labour’s foundation, he will slam his party for burying its head in the sand of hard-left politics rather than trying to win power.

He will tell a London audience: “Progressives risk confining ourselves within four walls of impotence: old style, tax and spend, state power, economics; foreign policy easily characterised as anti Western; embrace of ‘identity’ politics; and shouty denunciation of anyone who disagrees.

“I can’t honestly see any path forward other than fundamental reconstruction.”

Mr Blair will warn that Britain is living through a technological revolution which is as big as the industrial revolution which tore up the old rules of politics.

And he will urge the next Labour boss to stop squabbling about hard-left politics and have the “mentality of government”.

He will say: “Our task is to win power and get our hands stuck into the muddy mangle of governing, where out of it can be pulled the prize of progress.”

He will add: “Nothing less than ‘born again’ head to toe renewal, will do.”
