Tony Armatrading dead: Notting Hill star dies after cancer battle aged 60

Tim Bentinck, a friend of Tony Armatrading’s, announced his death on Twitter today. He shared a picture of Tony in hospital with his devoted wife Suzan Crowley and their dog by his side.

He wrote: “Very sad news. My dearest friend Tony Armatrading died of cancer an hour ago.

“I had the privilege of being his best man, and loved him dearly. He was a wonderful actor, and a true friend.”

Tony starred is best known for his roles in The Saint and romantic comedy Notting Hill.

As well as this, he acted in Channel 4 soap Brookside, Colour Blind, The Bill and A Touch Of Frost alongside David Jason.

He is also the younger brother of singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading.

Many fans and colleagues have flocked to Twitter to pay tribute.

His Notting Hill co-star Lorelei King wrote: “A lovely man. So many happy memories spending time with him and Suzy in Los Angeles. Love to you all. x.”

Adrian Rees commented: “Just heard that Tony Armatrading has died.

“So desperately sad and unfair. He was in the first play I worked on at the @BelgradeTheatreand he was the nicest, sweetest man you could wish to meet.

“He was also a bloody good actor. Sending healing hugs to his family and friends.”

A second commented: “I’m so sorry to hear this. Only worked with him once briefly – and he was a lovely chap.

A third added: “Sad to hear you’re going through this. Hope you’ll be alright soon Tim!”
