Toni Kroos declares Cristiano Ronaldo transfer "made everyone happy"

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos believes the time was right for Cristiano Ronaldo to leave the club despite Madrid appearing to struggle since his departure.

Ronaldo left the Bernabeu to sign for Juventus for €100m last summer, ending nine sensational seasons at the club in which he scored a staggering 450 goals in 438 appearances in all competitions.

Since his exit Madrid have gone into free-fall and suffered a season to forget in which they finished third in La Liga and were knocked out in the last-16 of the Champions League.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, helped Juventus win Serie A and scored 32 goals in the league, winning the competition’s Player of the Year award as a result.

Speaking to German outlet SportBild, Kroos admitted he was not surprised that Madrid suffered after Ronaldo’s departure, but maintains the move was the correct decision for the club.

“It would be strange if you didn’t miss someone like Cristiano Ronaldo, who has decided so many matches with his goals,” Kroos said.

“His transfer, however, made everyone happy. He wanted a new experience and Real Madrid earned a lot of money.”

In the interview Kroos also said he knew Bayern Munich were making a mistake when they sold him to Madrid in 2014.

The 29-year-old has formed a key part of the Madrid squad that has won so much in recent years, and he can boast three Champions League titles and a La Liga winner’s medal amongst other honours.

He said: “For me, it was already clear at the time of the transfer that Bayern made a mistake with my sale.

“It’s true that [Bayern president] Uli Hoeness has made it public of late – and it’s a testament to his greatness that he addresses it that way.

“If that was one of the reasons Pep [Guardiola] left Munich, he has to answer that, but I cannot confirm that he did not like my sale.”
