You may not recognise Tones and I, but she’s about to break a major UK chart record.

The Australian singer has racked up 10 weeks at number one in the UK with her earworm Dance Monkey – and if she hangs on for another week, she will set a new record for the longest time at number one by a solo female artist.

Dance Monkey currently equals the record held jointly by Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You and Rihanna’s Umbrella, which both managed 10 weeks at number one in 1992 and 2007 respectively.

So an 11th week would give Tones and I – real name Toni Watson – the record, and the claim that she has beat Whitney and Riri.

Not too shabby.

Dance Monkey has already become the longest running number one in Australian chart history, as it’s been sitting pretty at the top of the charts for 19 weeks now.

Yes, Dance Monkey has been Aussie number one for longer than Strictly has been on this year.

The tune beat Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You, which held the top spot for 15 weeks in 2017.

The track has also reached the top spot in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland… so yeah, you could say Dance Monkey is a hit.

Tones and I began busking in Byron Bay in 2017, and released her debut single Johnny Run Away in March this year, with her debut EP The Kids Are Coming dropping in August.

We’ll find out whether she has broken the UK chart record this Friday, but she faces stiff competition from Ellie Goulding, whose cover of Joni Mitchell’s River is just 2,000 chart sales behind Dance Monkey.
