In the 1980s, however, Jones began to decline as a performer, and had various TV and movie ideas pushed to one side.
He tried his hand at country music, but this was not a success, and his son Mark became his manager in 1986, after the death of his former manager, Gordon Mills.
In 1987, Jones re-entered the chart with A Boy From Nowhere and covered Prince’s hit Kiss, after which he gained further prominence when his son It’s Not Unusual was used in the popular US sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
He contributed to the soundtrack for 1997 movie The Full Monty, and released the album Reload, which was a cover duets album and featured singers such as Van Morrison, Robbie Williams and Stereophonics.
