Team GB have won their 11th gold of the Tokyo Olympics after Oliver Townend, Laura Collett and Tom McEwen sealed victory in the equestrian team eventing.

Great Britain saw off challenges from France and Australia to pick up gold in Japan, with world number one Towsend leading the charge in the showjumping.

It’s Britain’s first gold in the eventing in 49 years, with the last victory coming in Munich in 1972.

Individual winners have been in short supply too, with Leslie Law in 2004 the last to taste victory.

Team GB held a 17.9 penalty lead going into Monday’s final round and they comfortably retained their advantage.

Australia could only narrowly close the gap, with Great Britain finishing on a 13.9 lead.

Australia were therefore forced to concede silver, with France taking bronze.

It’s a brilliant start to the day for Team GB but it could get even better by the mid-afternoon as all three riders are in good positions in the individual standings.

Townsend is second, McEwen third and Collett fifth before the final round of jumping just after midday.
