Tokyo 2020 Olympics will receive four video games from Sega – App Trigger

I’m seeing double, here; four Tokyo 2020 Olympics video games coming to consoles, arcade and smartphones starting as early as this summer.

Sports video games outside of annualized licensed titles from EA, 2K and SIE are few and far between. If you can’t print money with them via ultimate teams and other similar fantasy modes, then it’s hard to find a mainstream interest. That hasn’t stopped Sega from going all in ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, however.

The Japanese games giant will be releasing four video games in preparation for the summer games next year, with the earliest release coming later this year. Details of the four games came via an announcement on Twitter, with Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch next year.

The more realistic title of the bunch will feature a select number of competitions, including swimming, hammer throw, basketball, beach volleyball, BMX, baseball, soccer, hurdles and more. Whatever the full release looks like, I hope there is a robust online infrastructure in place so players can host impromptu international competitions of their own!

That title is a pleasant surprise, considering that we were all expecting Sega to stop short at delivering anything more than Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. That title, which will be released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, will be released this winter, seeing Mario, Sonic, and their collective friends compete in more arcade-spirited challenges.

Speaking of arcades, Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Arcade Game will be an arcade version of the Switch game that I’m sure will be hard to find outside of Japan. Furthermore, Sonic at the Olympic Games is headed to iOS and Android in 2020, with only Sega’s IP involved in that title.

Though you shouldn’t expect the level of quality you would see in an AAA blockbuster, Sega bringing four Tokyo 2020 Olympics video games to the market is no small feat.
