Today’s back pages: ‘teen dream’ for Liverpool’s Curtis Jones as Arsenal pay the penalty

Carabao Cup fourth round
Liverpool 5 Arsenal 5 (Liverpool won 5-4 on penalties)

Liverpool’s dramatic victory over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup is the focus of many back pages today.

A crazy tie at Anfield finished 5-5 after 90 minutes and Liverpool progressed to the quarter-finals 5-4 on penalties.

The Guardian reports that Arsenal “pay the penalty” after throwing away leads at 3-1 and 4-2. It was Divock Origi’s 94th-minute equaliser that made it 5-5 and sent the game to spot kicks.

Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, 20, is “Anfield’s new hero”, says Metro, after saving Dani Ceballos’s effort in the shoot-out.

The Daily Telegraph adds it was a “teen dream” for Liverpool youngster Curtis Jones, with the 18-year-old stepping up to score the winning penalty in front of the Kop.

Speaking after the ten-goal thriller, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: “We can talk about tactics but who cares on a night like this? I hoped for the boys they would have a game to remember. What they did – I lost it really!”

In last night’s other league cup matches Marcus Rashford scored twice as Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge and Aston Villa were 2-1 winners against Wolves at Villa Park.
