Today’s back pages: no stopping Man City and Liverpool, says Kompany

Kompany’s warning

The Daily Mirror reports that there’s “no stopping the big two” in the Premier League this season.

That’s the verdict of former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, who says the Sky Blues and Liverpool are miles ahead of their EPL rivals.

The Belgian, who is now player-manager at Anderlecht, said: “My opinion is that, at the moment, it’s very difficult for the other clubs to compete because Liverpool and City are well-oiled machines.”

Last season City won the title with 98 points, one ahead of Liverpool. Chelsea, in third, finished 25 points behind the Reds.

Oval and out

England’s struggles in the final Ashes Test is reported on the back pages of the Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph.

On the opening day at The Oval Joe Root’s side threw away a promising position. The England skipper made 57 but failed to cash in after being dropped three times by the Australians.

England collapsed from 170-3 to 226-8 after leaving five cheap wickets. But Joe Buttler’s half-century steadied the ship and the hosts ended day one on 271-8.
