Today’s back pages: Jesus beats Pope as Man City resurrect Premier League title bid

Manchester City are back up to second in the Premier League table after beating Burnley 4-1 last night.

The Guardian reports that Pep Guardiola’s two-time defending champions have “resurrected” their title bid with the win at Turf Moor. However, they still trail league leaders Liverpool by eight points.

“Jesus beats Pope”, says the i paper’s back page, with Man City striker Gabriel Jesus having the measure of Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope.

The Brazilian was “in his prime”, the Daily Star adds, as he lit up Amazon Prime’s opening night of live Premier League football.

Jesus opened the scoring with a superb curling shot after 24 minutes and five minutes after half-time he doubled City’s lead with a volley.

Rodri’s stunning strike made it 3-0 on 68 minutes and substitute Riyad Mahrez added the fourth with three minutes to go. Burnley scored an 89th-minute consolation through Robbie Brady.

Liverpool are in action tonight when they face Merseyside rivals Everton at Anfield. Victory for the Reds will restore their healthy lead at the top.

When asked about his side’s chances of a third successive title, City boss Guardiola said sarcastically: “The title is over – that’s what I read. No-one gives us a chance, it’s done. No, I don’t believe it.

“Our team is stable and that’s what we want. For the distance we have against Liverpool it would be crazy to think about the title, honestly. It is about the next game.”
