Today’s back pages: Dina’s silver lining, Wales win, Wallabies whine

Silver for Dina in Doha

It was “Dina’s silver lining” last night in Doha, Metro and the Daily Star report, after Dina Asher-Smith won silver in the 100m final at the IAAF World Athletics Championships.

The 23-year-old became the first British woman sprinter to win an individual world medal in 36 years. She finished second behind Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who took gold with a time of 10.71 seconds.

Recording a personal best of 10.83, a new British record, Asher-Smith told the BBC: “I have worked so hard for these championships and hopefully I’ll go on to do even bigger things.

“I’m really pleased to come away with a personal best and national record. That is more than you could ever ask for in a world final. I was thinking on the line: this is your time to go.”

Ivory Coast sprinter Marie-Josee Ta Lou won the bronze medal with a time of 10.90.

Wales stun the Wallabies

Wales recorded a stunning victory over Australia at the Rugby World Cup yesterday, winning 29-25 in the pool D clash in Tokyo.

“Wales seal it with a kiss”, says The Times, after captain Alun Wyn Jones planted a kiss on the lips of team-mate George North at the final whistle.

iSport reports that after Wales’s win the Wallabies were “whining”.

Head coach Michael Cheika spoke out again about the high tackling debate that has dominated the Rugby World Cup.

Australia were bemused by referee Romain Poite’s decision to penalise centre Samu Kerevi for absorbing a high tackle from Rhys Patchell with his forearm so to prevent a clash of heads.

The Guardian says Cheika was “embarrassed” at the confusion caused by the crackdown on high tackles. He said: “I am not sure I know the rules any more.”
