To All The Boys’ Lana Condor proud to give Asian girls ‘Cinderella moment’ as she lifts lid on Netflix sequel

Lana Condor has opened up about how proud she is to give Asian girls a ‘Cinderella moment’ thanks to the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise.

The Vietnamese-American actress has become famous around the world thanks to her stint as Lara Jean Covey in the Netflix film, opposite Noah Centineo’s Peter Kavinsky.

And, speaking about her role as everyone’s favourite high-school student, the 22-year-old explained she is thrilled to represent her community.

Speaking about the sequel, she lifted the lid on how filming one particular scene ‘hit’ her.

‘There’s a scene where Lara Jean is in this beautiful, almost Cinderella gown and she walks down the stairs to Johnny Ambrose,’ she said. ‘I was waiting on top of the stairs right before we
started rolling and it hit me all at once how special that moment was because we don’t get Cinderella moments a lot.

‘As a young girl, I never got to see a Cinderella moment where the girl looked like me.

‘This is the most important part of the story for me is being able to represent our community,’ she continued to Entertainment Weekly. ‘It’s creating a space for Asian Americans to tell their story and have a moment.’

Jenny Han – who penned the books – is also delighted at how much the character has been celebrated by her readers.

‘There’s a little something in the first book about how Lara Jean never has anything to dress up as for Halloween, and that’s something from my life,’ she added to the publication.

‘So it’s cool to see all these young Asian American women own the moment.’

In a sneak peek at the upcoming Netflix release, Lara Jean and Peter have just taken their relationship up several notches – from a pretend romance to actual boyfriend/girlfriend status.

However, there are several spanners thrown in the works when John Ambrose McClaren pops up – aka another recipient of one of her old love letters.

In the immortal words of Peter Kavinsky, ‘Woah, woah, woah.’

Right on cue, there are high-school level tensions and tussles, while Lara Jean admits: ‘I thought having a boyfriend meant the idea of other boys left your mind completely.’

To All The Boys: PS I Still Love You is available to stream on Netflix from 12 February.
