Video game

'Tis the season to stock up on video games | Play Life, Live Games – Yahoo News

As hard as it is to believe, Christmas is just around the corner, and sure to be on many lists for Santa are plenty of video games, consoles and accessories.

So here is my unofficial buyers guide for the 2021 holidays. There’s going to be something here for just about every gamer, including myself (hint, hint).

The most difficult items to find again this year will be the new systems. The PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S and now the Nintendo Switch OLED are all still difficult to find. So if you’re shopping for someone who wants one of these systems, finding one probably will not be easy.

I would recommend staying away from the scalpers selling the systems at huge markups on sites like eBay. Instead, follow @IGNDeals or a similar site on Twitter and turn on notifications. You will get notified on sales you probably have no interest in, but they do send out tweets whenever new stock is available to purchase. That’s how I was able to get my PS5 earlier this year.

As far as games go, the two biggest releases this year are “Call of Duty: Vanguard” and “Battlefield 2042.” Both are first-person military shooters and both are the latest installments in very popular franchises. This year’s Call of Duty entry takes the series back to World War II, while Battlefield jumps forward to the near future.

Battlefield 2042," which launched Oct. 22, has maps supporting up to 128 players on PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, and up to 64 on PS4 and Xbox One.

If the person you’re shopping for is looking for something a little more retro, this week had two big re-releases. “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” was released Thursday on the Switch, while “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Collection” was released for the PS4, PS5, Xbox, Switch and PC.

While KOTOR is simply a port of the fantastic 2003 Star Wars game to a new system, the GTA collection updates the three PS2-era GTA games, “Grand Theft Auto III,” “Vice City” and “San Andreas,” giving the old games a fresh shine of paint in the form of 4K resolution, better textures and more modern controls.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which includes updated versions of Grand Theft Auto III, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas, will be coming out later this year for PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PCs. The collection will be coming to iOS and Android in the first half of 2022.

For sports lovers, the biggest games of the year have been “FIFA 22,” “Madden NFL 22” and “NBA 2K22.” These games are available on current PlayStation, Xbox and PC systems, while “NBA 2K22” also is available on Switch.

For the would-be superheroes, I’ve been playing “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” for the past two weeks and it’s a lot of fun. It too is available on every system (although the Switch version is streaming only, so if you don’t have the greatest of internet I would stay away from it).

While PlayStation is known for its exclusive games, it’s actually Xbox with the two biggest exclusives this year. “Forza Horizon 5,” an open world racing game, came out earlier this month and not only looks stunning but is receiving near universal acclaim. It’s followed by “Halo Infinite” next month.

I hope this helps some of you with your Christmas shopping, and be sure to keep an eye out for Black Friday deals. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
