TikTok star Abby Roberts chats James Charles, beauty community, and avoiding drama ‘at all costs’

Although the online beauty community has taken some fierce punches this year, it’s safe to say it’s thriving – and Abby Roberts is one of the best examples.

At just 18 years old, she’s built up a following of more than 4 million on TikTok with breathtaking makeup looks, turning herself into everything from Edward Scissorhands and Breaking Bad’s Walter White to the Burn Book from Mean Girls.

Seriously.

Although she’s loved makeup for years, Abby’s social media skyrocketed when fellow beauty guru James Charles noticed her talents.

‘I recreated one of his makeup looks last summer and he saw that and asked me to do a takeover on his Instagram Stories and I suddenly gained 100,000 followers overnight which was insane!’ she explained to Metro.co.uk, admitting that the sudden attention was definitely intimidating.

‘It’s quite overwhelming when it comes out of nowhere, from having no followers,’ she confessed. ‘It’s a lot to handle but I’m used to it now.’

While tutorials and glam looks have always been popular on YouTube, the past year or so has seen a sudden rise in beauty gurus going their own way with creative looks.

And Abby’s definitely no different, revealing that every impressive look takes her a whopping five to eight hours to complete.

‘The creative stuff I feel like started during Halloween,’ she explained. ‘I’d always do looks that aren’t just your everyday glam around that time and then, eventually, I just got bored of doing the glam stuff all year round.’

And it’s not just new styles beauty gurus are embracing. Although the community has been been at home on YouTube for years, more and more creators have been turning to TikTok (a platform that the likes of BTS and Will Smith have already embraced) to show off their skills in new ways.

‘Making YouTube videos can be quite time-consuming but TikTok doesn’t have any of that,’ Abby said, before revealing she ‘definitely’ sees it as a long-term career.

It’s no secret that the YouTube beauty community has faced controversy, the biggest of which involved beauty star Tati Westbrook making a 45-minute exposé video on her former friend James.

Despite some appearing to thrive on the drama, many want nothing to do with it, as Abby pointed out.

‘I was always in support of James because I feel like you never know the full story,’ she said of the drama.

‘It’s quite difficult to gauge when it’s on social media, you don’t know what’s true, what’s not…I always do just avoid the drama at all costs!’

However, despite TikTok appearing to be a relatively drama-free zone (for now), it faces its own problems – including people sometimes looking down on the creators.

‘I feel like it is such a new platform that not many people know about it yet and I think people can be a bit apprehensive when going onto a new platform,’ she explained.

‘They don’t really know what to expect,’ Abby acknowledged.

Nevertheless, with her follower count still skyrocketing, Abby doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

‘The long-term goal is to have my own makeup brand and be selling my own products,’ she considered matter-of-factly, before adding that she’d love to collab with Lana Del Rey and Billie Eilish.

Clearly she’s just about ready to take over the beauty world and we’re definitely on board.
